This is the second installment of the pivot mode videos that I'm releasing called Reflections. Revisiting my comments from the Stand by the Brother video, it appears that today's social climate is similar to that which birth my group Defiant Giants in the late 1980s.
The concept of Reflections was inspired by the murders of James Byrd, Jr. in Jasper, Texas in 1998 and Amadou Diallo in New York in 1999. The Diallo murder, in particular, caused a national conversation. I can recall people expressing to me how they couldn't believe that entering the new millennium a Black man could be killed by police in this manner. My response, in these conversations, would cause even more angst. I would simply ask, "When did it ever stop?" Upon their responses of "What?!", I would follow up by stating, "This has been happening to Africans since we've been in this country." "We have been abused and murdered by some within authoritative positions since the middle passage, if not before leaving the continent of Africa..."
There are many who
would counter the focus of the ‘White’ police officers who’ve killed ‘Blacks’
with the deflection of the so called ‘Black’ on ‘Black’ criminal killings (I
purposely used ‘so called’ for crime is crime...When another ethnicity commits
the same crime, we do not say ‘White’ on ‘White’, Asian on Asian, etc...I do not condone these killings, I'm in harmony with the understanding that they are manifested due to many
variables (This behavior needs to be addressed and eliminated)... Dr. Michael Eric Dyson,
the esteemed Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University, in addressing
this topic on TV, said (he said the following more eloquent than I will)...'That
when ‘Blacks’ kill other ‘Blacks’, they are arrested, prosecuted and go to
jail...He added that police officers are suppose to protect and serve the
people'...With respect to those who disagree with protesting the killings, its due to seeing those police being acquitted and/or not having charges levied against
them...&&& for those who want to present the 'Black' police officers who have killed 'Blacks' as evidence that its not about Race-ism, I will simply point out that 'Black' Overseers killed 'Black' enslaved people on the plantation...
PSA...All police officers are not bad & All 'Black' people are not criminals...
